Skin Tag Removal:
What is it?
Skin tag removal is a simple and straightforward process that can be performed with minimal discomfort. Skin tags are small, benign growths that often appear in areas where the skin rubs together, such as the neck, armpits, or groin. They are typically harmless and do not require treatment; however, some people opt to remove them for cosmetic reasons.
There are a few different methods of skin tag removal, including cryotherapy (freezing), electrocautery (burning), and excision (cutting). The most appropriate method will depend on the size and location of the skin tag. Skin tags can usually be removed in a office visit and do not typically require any type of anesthesia.
After skin tag removal, the area may be sore or red for a few days. It is important to keep the area clean and dry to avoid infection. If you have any concerns or questions about skin tag removal, be sure to speak with your doctor or dermatologist.
How it works
Once you have decided to proceed with skin tag removal, the area will be cleansed and an antiseptic solution may be applied. A local anesthesia may be used to numb the area if necessary. The chosen method of removal will then be performed.
For cryotherapy, a small probe is placed against the skin tag and frozen using liquid nitrogen. The freezing process destroys the cells of the skin tag and causes it to fall off within a few days.
For electrocautery, a small electrical current is passed through a needle that is placed against the skin tag. This method of removal cauterizes (seals) the blood vessels of the skin tag and causes it to fall off within a few days.
For excision, the skin tag is cut off with a scalpel or scissors. The area may be closed with stitches or surgical tape if necessary. This method of removal typically results in a small scar.
After skin tag removal, the area will be covered with a bandage. You will be given specific instructions on how to care for the area and when to return for follow-up appointments. Be sure to follow all instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and avoid infection.
